Asbestos

Asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard and is highly regulated. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United States Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) asbestos regulations are intertwined in this area.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) administers an asbestos removal program under Chapter 62-257, Florida Administrative Code.  The program’s intent is to prevent the release of asbestos fibers to the outside air during demolition or renovation activities.

The program requires prior notification to the DEP on the removal of threshold amounts of asbestos from certain types of facilities.

Often, questions arise concerning compliance with the asbestos regulations in Florida. The Asbestos Letters, Determinations and Clarifications web page provides information to assist in answering these compliance questions. The Asbestos Letters, Determinations and Clarifications page contains memoranda issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection or its agents and the US Environmental Protection Agency on applicability and compliance issues associated with the Asbestos National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutant (NESHAP, 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart M).

Frequently Asked Questions on Health Effects of Asbestos

Vermiculite Attic Insulation

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) launched a national consumer awareness campaign to provide homeowners with important information on vermiculite attic insulation, which may contain asbestos. This new campaign instructs homeowners on how to identify vermiculite attic insulation and recommends that people make every effort to not disturb the insulation. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is not involved in the coordination of this campaign, but DEP is providing direct internet links and contact information for the vermiculite attic insulation awareness campaign.
