Florida's springs provide a window into the Floridan
Aquifer system which provides 90 percent of North Florida's
drinking water. More than 700 freshwater springs offer unique
recreational opportunities and provide a financial benefit
to the local communities that surround them. Through funding
appropriated by Governor Jeb Bush and the Legislature for
the Florida Springs Initiative in 2001, the Department is striving
to protect Florida's springs through research, monitoring,
education and landowner assistance programs...more
