At one site, besides the pesticides, the contractor
also removed about 1 cubic yard of soil and a section of storage
building wall that had been contaminated as a result pesticides
escaping from old, deteriorated bags. One of the reasons for
providing the Operation Cleansweep service is to remove pesticides
in deteriorated containers to prevent environmental contamination.
Ongoing collections will be suspended about June 15, 2003 and
begin again within a few months as new state fiscal year funding
becomes available. The Florida legislature has already
appropriated funds for Operation Cleansweep to continue. A waiting
list for service is already growing for the next round of pickups.
