FDEP Temporal Variability (Trend) Network

sunrise on lakeThe basic design units of the Temporal Variability (TV), or trend, monitoring network are the state of Florida’s 52 United States Geologic Survey (USGS) eight-digit surface water drainage basins.

The purposes of the TV network are to correlate Tier I, II, and III IWRM results with seasonal climatic change (i.e., is sampling occurring during wet or dry hydrologic condition?), to make best estimates of temporal variance of sampled analytes within the USGS drainage basins, and to determine how these analytes are changing over time. It is managed by the Watershed Monitoring Section of DEP, which also manages the Status Network. The TV Network is subdivided into surface water (SWTV) and ground water (GWTV) networks.

In both the SWTV and GWTV Networks, field analytes (pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, and temperature) are sampled on all site visits. In addition, laboratory analytes such as Total Organic Carbon (TOC), chlorophyll, bacteria, nutrients, metals, total dissolved solids (TDS), color, turbidity, and alkalinity are collected monthly during SWTV site visits, and quarterly at GWTV sites.

The SWTV Network consists of 75 fixed location sites in streams and rivers that are sampled on a monthly basis. The sites are usually located at the lower end of a USGS drainage basin and are placed at or close to a flow gauging station. These sites enable FDEP to obtain chemistry, discharge, and loading data at the point that integrates the land use activities of the watershed. In addition, some SWTV sites are located at or near the Florida State boundary with Alabama and Georgia. These stations are used to obtain chemistry and loading data for major streams entering Florida.

SWTV sites are not designed to monitor point sources of pollution since TV sites are located away from known outfalls or other regulated point source inputs. The SWTV sites are sampled by personnel working for the FDEP, the water management districts (WMDs), and county agencies. All samples are analyzed in the FDEP Central Laboratory. Each site is sampled on a monthly basis for physical, chemical and biological analytes.

  • Statewide SWTV data is available via the Department’s STORET Web site (http://storet.dep.state.fl.us/) using STORET org. ID 21FLGW. For further information, call us at (850)245-8505.

Ground Water TV (GWTV) Network

samplers on a lakeThe GWTV consists of 46 fixed location sites (24 unconfined aquifer wells, 21 confined aquifer wells, and one spring vent site). These sites were located so that each USGS drainage basin had a representative site for both the confined and unconfined aquifer systems when both of these systems were present within the drainage basin.

As with the SWTV Network, GWTV sites are sampled by personnel working for FDEP, the WMDs, and county agencies, with all samples analyzed in the FDEP Central Laboratory. Since the temporal variance of water chemistry in confined aquifers is much less than that of unconfined aquifers, field analytes at confined sites are sampled quarterly and unconfined ground water resources are sampled monthly. Laboratory analytes at both confined and unconfined aquifers are sampled quarterly.

We are grateful to the citizens, county and city governments, and regulated facilities that provide us access to sample for regional and statewide water quality.
